The course aims at providing the student with the basic and advanced knowledge of labor and delivery. It deals with labor conduction and monitoring. It also explores the different situations of a normal and dystocic birth.

Program

Syllabus

The partogram; comparing different partograms and learning how to fill in informations.
Induction of labor: mechanical methods (sweeping membranes, amniotomy, ripening balloons) and pharmacological (prostaglandins, oxytocin). Augmentation. Monitoring the maternal and fetal wellbeing. Cardiotocograph monitoring.
Dystocia: cervical, mechanical and functional dystocia during the first and second stage of labor. Posterior positions. Operative vaginal delivery: vacuum extraction. Video. The forceps.
The use of fundal pressure.
Shoulder dystocia. Theory and practice of emergency maneuvers.
The third stage of labor. Retained placenta. Inverted uterus.
Post-partum hemorrhage: the four Ts . The early post-partum hemorrhage.
Cesarean section. Video. VBAC and TOL in a woman with a uterine scar. Uterine rupture.
Obstetric fistula.
Pain control during labor.
