Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge on the auditory system functioning and the causes of hearing disorders in childhood, adulthood and old age, with particular attention to the correlation between hearing loss and communication. After completing this module, students will possess knowledge on the causes and effects of these diseases on the acoustic-verbal communicative function.

Anatomy and physiology of outer, middle and inner ear
• Eardrum-ossicular dynamic and tubal functionality
• Cochlear physiology: movement of the endo-cochlear liquids; basilar membrane vibration; ciliated cells; mechanical -electrical transduction
• Physiology of the auditory nerve pathways: auditory nerve; central auditory system; perception system
• The binaural hearing
• Otologic symptoms: hearing loss, tinnitus, ear pain, otorrhea.
• Hearing loss classification
• Hearing loss causes in children and adults
• Newborn screening
• Social, cognitive and linguistic consequences of childhood deafness
• Presbycusis
• Communication in the old age; psycho-social aspects of presbycusis

Examination Methods
The exam consists of a written test based on open-ended questions. In response questions, it is required the ability to match the synthesis and clarity.
Each of the open questions is evaluated from 0 to 10 points, according to:
a) relevance of the answer
b) ability to synthesize
c) properties of language
