Learning outcomes

• Introduction to human anatomy in English.
• Knowledge of the most common lexical terms related to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.
• Consolidation of applied grammar form and function (level B2/1 CEFR)for a healthcare professional
• Professional linguistic approach during patient rehabilitation interaction.

Program

The programme focuses particularly on teacher-student and peer-to-peer interaction in order to encourage the use of English in psychiatric rehabilitation learning and research. The choice of course material is based on input delivered by the teacher, from which the students are expected to integrate their specific language competences.
'The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat' by Dr. Sacks is used to introduce students to the world of rehabilitation in English as well as a basis for best practice.
Didactic activity includes text and power point analysis, reading comprehension, and identification of form and function related to lexical and grammatical value within a scientific text type.
Oral skills are developed by means of student presentations, with a view to enhancing their problem solving abilities with patients in psychiatric rehabilitation.

Examination Methods

The exam consists of two parts: an assigned research topic presented in power point and a written exam. The written exam takes place during the exam sessions established for the academic year in progress.
Research for the presentation is carried out in groups, normally three members, but the lingustic assessment and evaluation is finalised on individual performance.

The written exam evaluates English skills by means of a dictation (similar to note-takng), reading comprehension and a language in use gap-fill exercise: all these exercises are contextualized and related to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
