Learning objectives

The professionalizing laboratories are essential learning experiences that anticipate the clinical training; offer students the opportunity to experiment in applying the acquired knowledge and theoretical principles, in a safe and controlled environment. The goal is to allow the student to experiment in virtual care settings, without putting the safety of real patients at risk. They aim to develop both practical skills (through simulations in plausible clinical settings, with the use of simulators) and other transversal skills (care, relational, communication, problem solving, critical thinking). They are carried out in small groups throughout the academic year (I - II semester), under the guidance of tutors. In particular, the first year's laboratory aims to provide students with the methodological tools for relating to psychiatric users in a protected and controlled environment, so as to allow them to subsequently apply the skills learned in the laboratory and in real contexts.

Program

During the workshop, the topics of communication, management of the observation interview, the relationship between operator and user in the mental health field will be addressed through practical exercises. Specifically, the topics covered will be:
- Communication: what does it mean to communicate, the different types of communication, skills and errors in communication; listening methods. Management of silence.
- The relationship between operator and user in different therapeutic contexts: Day Center, SPDC and therapeutic communities. Integration between internship experiences and theory.
- Privacy, consent and professional secrecy in the TeRP code of ethics
- Management of the remote relationship: the telephone interview
- The experience of illness: the illness event in the life of the individual, sharing of testimonies and comparison in the class group
- Aggression: analysis of the cycle of aggression and de-escalation techniques

Didactic methods

The topics will be addressed starting from discussions of clinical and rehabilitative situations, simulations, role playing, plenary discussions and testimonies from Mental Health operators and experts.

Learning assessment procedures

An evaluation of the level achieved by the student in the laboratory is foreseen for each type of technique/skill and the authorization to apply it in real internship contexts. Production of a final paper whose final mandate will be communicated before the second internship experience.

Evaluation criteria

Active participation, the ability to engage in discussion, and the knowledge and ability to experiment with different techniques will be assessed.
