The course program includes the following topics:
- Brief historical overview of the discipline.
- Brief historical overview of the discipline in relation to the medical context.
- Concept of culture: identity in contemporary society and the meaning of belonging.
- The methodology of anthropological investigation: ethnography and ethnographic investigation.
- The methodology of medical anthropology and the discourse around health and disease: case studies compared.
- Methodological tools for carrying out research on themes, problems and meanings of cultural processes in multicultural societies
- Ethnography in the medical field: how to use anthropological methodology. Professional use and use for the profession. The narrative method
- The methodology of anthropological investigation: how to enhance it in the hospital and healthcare world.
- The body, incorporation, being in the world through the body. - Observation in medical disciplines mediated by anthropological knowledge

Didactic methods
The teaching methodologies include:
- frontal lessons characterized by interactivity and active participation of the students;
- group and class work
- individual work
- group presentations
- group and plenary discussions
Learning assessment procedures
The evaluation will consist of three parts: 10% of the evaluation will be entrusted to the group presentation of an ethnographic case present in the bibliography under case studies; 30% for critical reflection (3 pages) on a scientific article distributed in class; 60% for answering two out of three open questions during the exam procedure on topics covered during the course and on the compulsory texts.
Evaluation criteria
The ability to structure an integrated, coherent and clear discourse which is based on a reflective and critical problematisation of the subject matter and which demonstrate that you establish relevant connections to the themes present in the reference literature with practical examples deduced from personal experiences, together with the internalization of the specific language of the discipline.
