Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
To transmit the main chemical principles to allow comprehension of the mechanisms that control matter interaction. To explain macromolecules organization and the principle of metabolism. To understand factors that regulate the main metabolic pathways. Emphasis will be on physiological and pathological processes associated to the main biochemical functions.
Program
BIOMOLECULES Proteins Amino acids: peptide bond - peptides. Protein structure: primary - secondary - tertiary - quaternary (hemoglobin, myoglobin) - protein folding - post-translational modifications. Allosteric proteins.
Enzymes
Enzyme kinetics: Michaelis-Menten equation - effects of pH on enzymatic activity - enzyme / substrate complex - activation energy. Competitive and non-competitive inhibition.
Nucleic acids
DNA: nucleotides - phosphodiester bond - double helix - forms of DNA. RNA: nucleotides - base pairing - tRNA. DNA / protein interactions.
Carbohydrates
Monosaccharides: asymmetric centers - cyclic forms - mutarotation. Disaccharides: glycosidic bond. Polysaccharides: starch and glycogen - cellulose. Glycoproteins: blood groups.
Lipids
Lipids: glycerophospholipids - sphingolipids - cholesterol. Double lipid layer: fluidity - dynamics - diffusion.
METABOLISM
Bioenergetics
Energy in metabolism: flow of electrons - Redox reactions. Thermodynamics: free energy G - Entropy. Energetic potential of ATP - coupled reactions.
General metabolism
Regulatory mechanisms: allosteric regulation - compartmentalization in the cell - enzymatic levels - coordinated regulation (futile cycles). Hormones. Hormonal regulation of metabolism. Vitamins / coenzymes. Digestion. Carbohydrate metabolism
Glycolysis: destinies of pyruvate: lactacid, alcoholic fermentation. Bisphosphoglycerate - regulation. Glycogen and starch: phosphorylase - glycogen synthase - deramifying enzyme - regulation. Lipoproteins: properties - metabolism - LDL receptors. Oxidation of fatty acids: mobilization of fats - activation and transport - oxidation. Chetonic bodies. Biosynthesis of cholesterol. Biosynthesis of fatty acids.
Amino acid metabolism
Amino acid degradation: transamination - oxidative deamination - ammonia transport - urea cycle - ketoacid metabolism. Cycle: glucose-alanine. Ketogenic and glucogenic amino acids. Introduction to the biosynthesis of amino acids: essential and non-essential amino acids. Entry of amino acids into the citric cycle. Biosynthesis of proteins.
