Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing the students with basic knowledge related to the understanding of the chemical processes and environmental impact caused by pollution. The main water quality parameters, atmospheric pollutants and soil contaminates as well as the consequences for the environment of energy production and consumption are discussed. The course will provide the student with the basics knowledge for a critical analysis of the chemical-physical monitoring of the quality of water, air and soil.
Program
Basic concepts related to environment and pollution.
Air-water interaction: gas dissolution. Acid-base equilibria of the H2O-CO2 system, acidity and alkalinity.
Water-soil interaction (solubility eqilibrium, oxidation-reduction and complexing) salinity, hardness, reduction potential, Henry’s law. Cycle of the organic pollutants in the environment: breakdown and biodegradation. Parameter useful for water monitoring: BOD, COD, TOC, nitrogen and phosphorus.
Chemical composition and photochemical reactivity of the atmosphere. Stratospheric ozone and the ozone hole.
Energy sources, combustion processes and pollution
Air pollution: greenhouse gases, NOx, SOx, particulate matter, acid rains, VOC, photochemical smog
Main environmental properties of soil: organic soil and inorganic soil.
Soil contamination sources, chemical nature of contaminants and interactions with water and atmosphere.
Examination Methods
Multiple choice test + two open question
