Learning outcomes

This unit aims at illustrating the essential aspects of the most common industrial chemical processes. In particolar it will focus on safety concerns about dangerous compounds and their processing. Special attention will be dedicated to active and passive safety systems and to health risks evaluations.

Program

1) Pysical and chemical parameters of various substances
Definition of chemical-physical stability, fire risks, explosion risks in a production plant
2) Chemicals classification
REACH rules, CLP protocol. Danger warnings and precaution advice
3) Oil Industry. Refinery, Petrolchemistry, Coal
4) Products and processes in petrolchemistry
Olefin production, Schemes regarding principal petrolchemistry processes
5) Basic organic products
Methanol, Formaldehyde, halogen derivatives, aromatic compounds
6) Derivative organic products
Polimers, Resins, Dyes, Detergents
7) Industrial Inorganic Chemistry
Nitrogen cycle: fertilizers. Sulfur cycle:solforic acid. Phosphorous cycle: fertilizers,
elementary phosphorous. Cements and ceramics. Electrochemical processes: chlorine
production; galvanic industry.
8) Chemical risk evaluation in the industrial area.
Index methods for establishing danger levels of chemical substances in the industrial
Setting. Practical examples.
