Learning objectives
The course proposes an articulate and critical reflection dedicated to the relationships that fiction and documentary cinema maintain with the representation of history, gradually pandering to new formulas of historical truth dictated by production strategies or political power. In this perspective, different historical-cinematographic lines of interpretation that have emerged over time will be analysed, as much as the different theoretical approaches that inspire them. Particular attention will be paid to case studies of film propaganda found in fiction, “from life” films, documentaries and newsreels. At the same time, the course will recommend films and texts essential for exam preparation in order to provide useful tools to stimulate classroom participation. The objectives of the course aim to provide students with a complex view of what cinema – in its various emanations and formats – has meant with respect to the constitution of a shared imagery in a political, social as well as historiographical sense. The course also includes a module addressing the problems of disseminating historical knowledge in a variety of contexts and for a multiplicity of audiences. While these do not exclude the more traditional didactic mediation, even more attention will be paid to forms intended for non-specialist audiences (bearing in mind, as in the audio-visual field, the relationship between historical writing and fiction set in history) – a significant demand for knowledge that is not always satisfied by professional historians. At the end, the student will be able to evaluate and produce effective and reliable forms of historical communication, adequately taking into account the specificity of its channels and other components.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
