Learning objectives

Taking inspiration from environmental epidemiology and air pollution studies, the course illustrates methodological and statistical concepts that can be applied to many fields of research. The course will apply an intuitive and applicative approach.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites

Program

- Introduction to the correct interpretation of statistical inference (p-values and confidence intervals)
- Statistical methods in multicentre studies: fixed-effects and random-effects models, generalized estimating equations, metanalysis
- Study designs for assessment of short-term effects: time-series analysis and case-crossover designs
- Exposure assessment strategies: interpolation, land-use regression, and air dispersion models
- Disentangling the highly correlated components of air pollutant mixtures: introduction to the methods used in multipollutant research
- Use of non-linear functions to characterize the shape of the concentration-response function

Didactic methods

The course is structured in theoretical lectures (20 h) on statistical and epidemiological methodology in research, taking inspiration from the study of the health impact of air pollution. Attendance is mandatory in person. The teaching material is available on the e-learning web page of the course (Moodle platform).

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam consists of a test with multiple choice questions that takes place via the Moodle platform, in the Computer Room, or using personal PCs. Each question is assigned a predefined score. The test lasts 45 minutes.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Assessment

The aim of the test is to verify the knowledge of the topics covered and the ability to correctly interpret the results of scientific research. Knowledge of the topics and the ability to interpret results in contexts similar to those exemplified in class will be assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Each question is assigned a predefined score. The final evaluation is expressed in 30ths.
