Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce the student to the use of databases and search engines of biomedical interest accessible via the computer network. The teaching is aimed at: enabling the student to acquire knowledge of the information archived in the main biomolecular and genomic databases; exercise the ability to use genomic analysis tools applicable to the study of the mechanisms controlling gene expression in tissue differentiation also in reference to the development of human diseases; develop the ability to adapt bioinformatics to the analysis of 3D cellular models.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites.

Program

The following computational tools for querying the major databases will be used: GeneBank, Genecards, SwissProt, CDD (Conserved Domain Database), and OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man). The human genome sequences will be analyzed using alignment algorithms such as BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and FASTA; research strategies based on the alignment programs will be applied to genomic sequence analysis; programs accessible by the server ExPASy (Expert Protein Analysis System) Bioinformatic resource portal will be used for protein analysis.
