Learning objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the biological, environmental, cultural, processing etc that underlie the emergence of new infections and their spread. The molecular aspects of microorganisms that emerge as new agents of infection are also analysed. It is also considered the re-emerging microorganisms that appeared to be public health problems resolved.

Introduction to the general concepts that lead to the emergence of new microorganisms as agents of infection. Multi-drug resistance microorganisms as a major emerging public health problem. Mechanism of action of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Main multi-resistant microorganisms. Methods of rapid detection of antibiotic resistance. MDR microorganisms: Klebsiella pneumoniae MDR and hypervirulent. General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations of bacteria and their emerging infections: Enterobacteria and Escherichia coli O157-H7; Cholera and Vibrio cholerae O139; Helicobacter; Campylobacter; Clostridium difficile; Listeria monocytogenes Legionella; Burkholderia pseudomallei Borrelia and Lyme disease Mycobacteria and tuberculosis General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations of viruses and their emerging infections: Influenza viruses and avian influenza Ebola viruses and hemorrhagic fever viruses, encephalitis viruses: zika, chikungunia, West Nile virus etc, Hepatitis B and C virus, Retrovirus and HIV, Coronavirus: SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. Monkeypox General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations of parasites and their emerging infections: malaria and Plasmodium Knowlesi, Prions and prion diseases. Learning assessment procedures

The exam will take place in written mode. The student is required to answer 3 open questions that touch on the topics covered in class. The questions are of a general nature and therefore concern a single topic or they may require consideration of an aspect that concerns several topics.

Evaluation criteria

The student's ability to respond comprehensively and organically to the questions will be evaluated. The completeness of the answer takes into account all the salient aspects of the topic: characteristics of the microorganism, the pathogenesis and the molecular aspects for which it is pathogenic, the reason why it is considered emerging and which factors have a decisive role, etc.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed out of thirty. Each of the three questions is scored out of tenths for correctness and completeness of the information. The sum of the scores obtained in the individual questions constitutes the final score
