Learning outcomes
Programme
History of psychiatry and the concept of mental disorders.
• History of models of interpretation, models of psychotherapy and their most famous representatives
• History of human trials with people affected by mental disorders in nazism and in Trentino-Alto Adige
• The situation in Italy until the law of Basaglia 1978 and of the current situation
• Typology of mental disorders and the systems of classification ICD-10 and DSM-V. The model ICF
• Most frequent examples: depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, addictions.
• Means of clinical diagnostics.
• Models of treatment: pharmacology, psychotherapy, psychosocial rehabilitation
• The patient affected by mental disorders in various departments of the hospital
• Clinical exmples and experiences in the fields of psycho-oncology and psycho-traumatology.
• The role of the nurse in the handling of patients affected by mental disorders
• Communication with the patient and their confidants: principles of good communication, models of active listening, coping, handling of emotions.
• Deliberation of the own role as professionals: handling the own emotions, containing stress and risk of burn-out, emotional intelligence
• The group: concepts, principles of the formation and dynamics in the group, models and representatives
• Handling of conflicts: models of interpretation and intervention. Prevention.
• Pathologic phenomena in groups: mobbing, staffing, straining, molesting
• Principles of prevention, intervention
• Systems of external support
• Communication and leadership in professional groups

Didactic objectives:
Knowledge: at the end of the course the students have knowledge of the history of mental diorders and their treatments, their concepts and most famous representatives, of the exploitation of the afflicted in human trials, of the sitution in Italy until the law of Basaglia and after, of the systems of classification, of the most important mental disorders.
Knowledge of interpretation of appearance of mental disorders in hospital departments.
Knowledge of the technics of good communication and means of preventing the risk of own burn-out.
Knowledge of formation of groups, strategies and models for handling conflicts, knowledge of pathologic phenonomena like mobbing, knowledge of principles of good leadership.
Abilities: through the study of the history and the diverse concepts the students have the ability to identify the ideologies existing in society versus mental disorders, to deliberate their own role, to execute good communication with patients and confidants, to deliberate their own sympathy, to self-protect, to handle their own emotions. They know how to apply the strategies to resolve conflicts, avoid mobbing and they are aware of their capability in leadership.
