Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the main tools, methods and problems of librarianship and bibliography increasingly related to the world of digital. The course will move from two points of view: that of the librarian and that of the user who both move in the interactive digital documentary environment.

Prerequisites and basic notions

None requested.

Program

The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of librarianship and bibliography and the fundamental elements related to the representation of documentary information in a digital environment. The focus will be on sources from the humanities with comparative examples from the sciences of medicine. Particular reference will be made to the practice of indexing documents in online information retrieval tools, to how digital methods affect search results and to the forms of selection of documents included in databases and search engines. We will discuss cataloguing in leading public libraries, commercial search engines, publishers and aggregators, universities and their repositories, and new modalities. We will consider how access to sources is facilitated in archives and manuscript repositories in Italy and elsewhere. The concept of information literacy and the most significant aspects related to the transformation of books and reading in a digital environment will be explored.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

Presential lectures, guest lectures from experts, workshops.

Learning assessment procedures

Examination consists of a final oral interview aimed at ascertaining the student’s ability to use the acquired knowledge to present an argument. It will test understanding of the various topics covered during the course as well as the recommended reading.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The oral discussion-interview will verify the student’s ability to communicate what has been acquired with appropriate language and expression, and with adequate critical and methodological skills.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Examination is not divided into parts and therefore the final mark will be determined by the oral exam.
