Program
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of librarianship and bibliography and the fundamental elements related to the representation of documentary information in a digital environment. The focus will be on sources from the humanities with comparative examples from the sciences of medicine. Particular reference will be made to the practice of indexing documents in online information retrieval tools, to how digital methods affect search results and to the forms of selection of documents included in databases and search engines. We will discuss cataloguing in leading public libraries, commercial search engines, publishers and aggregators, universities and their repositories, and new modalities. We will consider how access to sources is facilitated in archives and manuscript repositories in Italy and elsewhere.
