Learning outcomes
The course is designed to develop the students' analytical and interpretive skills of texts in English. It is structured to equip the students with the linguistic and metalinguistic tools necessary to produce texts in English that are coherent with the target audience, the modality, and the medium chosen for the message. It explores and relies on the many potential applications of English to different international contexts.
Part I features a theoretical introduction to the many available forms of communication mediated by the English language. It sketches a quick outline of the diachronic evolution of the language, and then focuses synchronically on the different forms of English at the global level (ENL, ESL, EFL, ELF). The course will also tackle a few fundamental notions on semantics and pragmatics, multimedia discourse, media ecology, rhetorics and persuasive discourse, and critical discourse analysis.
Part I is designed in continuity with Part II.
Program
1. From Old English to Contemporary English:
- Main phases of the history of the English language
- English today:
- ENL, ESL, EFL
- ELF
- English as the language for global communication
2. Semantics vs pragmatics: fundamental notions
3. Multimedia discourse
4. Notions on media ecology
5. Rhetorics and persuasive discourse
6. Critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool for communicative strategies in persuasive language
Bibliography
Examination Methods
The exam, completely in English, will be held in written form during the dedicated periods of the academic year. It is made of two parts. The first consists of a series of multiple-choice and open questions aimed at evaluating the assimilation of the theoretical contents of Part I.
The second part is related to Part II of this course.
Non-attending students must prepare a selection of texts to be chosen from the bibliography together with the lecturer.
