Learning outcomes
The course is designed to develop the students' analytical and interpretive skills of texts in English. It is structured to equip the students with the linguistic and metalinguistic tools necessary to produce texts in English that are coherent with the target audience, the modality, and the medium chosen for the message. It explores and relies on the many potential applications of English to different international contexts.
Part II (p) is designed in continuity with Part I. It features a series of practical analyses of different forms of communication in English. The course will tackle political, advertising, and journalistic language, focusing on the peculiarities of each of these categories and on a number of exemplary case studies. The last part of the course will be dedicated to professional communication, especially to persuasive language (e.g. professional pitching).
Program
1. Main features of political language:
- analysis of and discussion on TV programmes from several English-language channels (mainly SKY NEWS, BBC WORLD, CNN and FOX NEWS), favouring snippets from the news and from political debates
- analysis of and discussion on political communication through social media
2. Main features of advertising language:
- analysis of advertisements from a cross-medial perspective (marketing campaigns on magazines/TV/the radio/social media and the different forms the message takes according to the medium)
- concept of virality
- politically correct, cancel culture, inclusive language
-non-verbal elements of advertising
3. Main features of journalistic language:
- analysis of articles from quality papers and tabloids, both online and offline, both national and international
- contrastive analysis of articles from newspapers with different political leanings
- contrastive analysis of real and fake news
4. Professional forms of communication:
-Pitching: aims of the pitch, analysis of its main features, target audience and word choice, evaluation of the pitch
Bibliography
Examination Methods
The exam, completely in English, will be held in written form during the dedicated periods of the academic year. It is made of two parts. The first pertains to Part I of the course. The second consists of a series of multiple-choice and open questions aimed at evaluating the assimilation of the practical contents of Part II (p).
Non-attending students must prepare a selection of texts to be chosen from the bibliography together with the lecturer.
