Learning outcomes

The course provides knowledge on the organization of genetic material, transmission and recombination of hereditary characteristics, the aberrations of chromosomes and genes, the dynamics of genes in populations. It also introduces genetic evidence of carcinogenesis and a number of major diseases, and the differences between genetically modified organisms and "natural" ones

Program

GENETICS AND THE ORGANISM
The genes as determinants of the intrinsic properties of a species - Genetic variability - Methodologies used in genetics - Model organisms - Genes , environment and the organism

PROFILES OF INHERITANCE
Autosomal - Sex chromosomes and sex-linked inheritance – Cytoplasmic heredity

THE FOUNDATIONS OF CHROMOSOME LEGACY
The historical development of the chromosome theory - The nature of the chromosomes - Mitosis and Meiosis - The behavior of chromosomes and the pattern of inheritance in eukaryotes - The chromosomes of the organelles

THE RECOMBINATION AND MAPS OF ASSOCIATION
Pattern of inheritance of genes associated - Recombination - maps Association - The chi-square

THE GENETICS OF VIRUSES AND BACTERIA
THE bacterial conjugation - The transformation of bacteria - Genetics of batetriofagi - Transduction

FROM GENE TO Phenotype
Genes and gene products - Interactions between alleles of a gene - gene - protein interactions

STRUCTURE AND DNA REPLICATION
The structure of DNA - The semi-conservative replication

RNA AND PROTEIN SYNTHESIS
RNA - Transcription - splicing - gene - protein colinearity - The Genetic Code - Translation

REGULATION OF GENE TRANSCRIPTION
The gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes

THE DYNAMIC GENOME : transposable elements
Transposable elements in prokaryotes - The transposable elements in eukaryotes

MUTATION , REPAIR AND recombinations
Point mutations - Biological mechanisms of repair - The meiotic crossing-over - Changes in the number of chromosomes - Changes in chromosome structure

QUANTITATIVE GENETICS
The genes and quantitative trait - Quantifying heritability - Localization of genes

EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS
Variability and divergence among populations - Speciation - The origin of new genes

THE POPULATION GENETICS
