Learning outcomes
Reading and analysing attentively meaningful literary texts of the Italian tradition, students will learn how to examine the main characteristics of different literary genres.
Program
1. Poetry: sonnet (Dante; Foscolo); 'canzone' (Petrarca; Leopardi); ballad (Cavalcanti; Lorenzo il Magnifico).
2. Chivalric Poem: Ariosto; Tasso.
3. Theatre: comedy (Machiavelli; Goldoni); tragedy (Alfieri; Manzoni).
4. Novella: Boccaccio; Giraldi Cinthio; Verga; Pirandello.
5. Fairy Tale: Straparola; Basile.
6. Essay: Machiavelli; Beccaria.
7. Novel: the historical novel (Manzoni) and its evolution (Nievo); the ‘verista’ novel (Verga) and the naturalistic novel (Deledda); the epistolary novel (Foscolo); Svevo and Pirandello.
Examination Methods
Oral exam only for attending students, who have to attend at least six lectures. Signatures will be collected.
