Period

Semester 1 dal Oct 2, 2023 al Jan 26, 2024.

Courses Single

Authorized with reserve

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge about basic calculation methods in the fields of mathematical and statistics analyses. Specifically, the part of mathematical analysis includes functions, limits, derivatives and integrals, while the part relating to statistics includes basic concepts of descriptive statistics, probability, distributions and hypothesis testing. The course also provides the basic statistical knowledge for planning experiments, collecting and analysing data, interpreting and presenting results. The skills to be transmitted include knowing how to use the theoretical notions of mathematics and statistics to solve problems that are commonly faced in the practice of a generic food laboratory.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Adequate knowledge and mathematical and scientific skills typical of the training provided by the upper-level secondary school are required.

Didactic methods

Lectures and exercises. Lessons will be delivered exclusively in presence. In case of limitations due to COVID, upon presentation of the relative request, supports such as video recordings or additional teaching / bibliographic material will be provided.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of
- a written test with open questions on the mathematics and statistics parts,
- a short oral exam which consists of a statistical analysis of the data.
The exam methods are not differentiated between attending and non-attending students.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

To pass the exam, students must demonstrate that they:
- have understood the fundamental elements of mathematics and the principles of statistics;
- can solve exercises explaining their reasoning in a rigorous way;
- know how to apply the acquired knowledge to solve concrete problems related to the topics of the course and presented as exercises.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The paper will be evaluated up to a maximum of 27 points. The oral exam will be evaluated up to a maximum of 6 points. The final exam will consist of the sum of the scores of the individual tests. Any score above 30 will be converted into 30L.
