Learning outcomes
Introductory and general approach to first centuries e.v. Christian Writers
Program
Course contents:
- Epistemological status of the discipline, which deals with texts of different linguistic and geographical contexts, collected in an ideal corpus for the common religious reference. - Geo-Historical framework of the I-V e.v.
- Biblical writings as Christian literature and as its hypotext.
- Main literary genres, between classicism and new patterns.
- Transmitting, writing, storage: papyraceous supports and parchment, the diffusion of the "code". Literature in fragments.
- Ancient Christian literature in the light of Women studies and Gender studies
- Texts and authors, diachronic review:
- early writings not included into biblical collection (Canon)
- main literary forms of the 2nd century, in particular apologetic bibliodion (Justin) and martyrial and hagiographic bios
- 3rd century literary development in different geographical and linguistic areas (Asian and Alexandrian area in Greek, African area in Latin)
- Christian literature flourishing in the 4th century, during the Empire apogeo and crisis and the parallel changes in relationship between Church and Imperial Establishment
- Development of the 5th century, inside and outside the Empire: synthetic review
