Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the historical understanding of the fundamentals of Greek and Latin theatre. At the end of the course the student will have to prove: 1) knowledge of the historical development of the Greek tragedy, its forms and contents; 2) knowledge of the institutional framework of the Attic theatre; 3) ability to read and interpret ancient theatrical texts, commenting single passages and framing the text in the panorama of the author's production.
Prerequisites and basic notions
There are no specific requirements for this course. Greek and Latin texts will be read in Italian translation.
Program
The module is divided into two phases. In the first part, the historical history of Greek tragedy is presented, discussing its origin and development up to classical times, with emphasis on forms, political-institutional aspects, and the relationship between playwright and community.
The second part deals with the reading (in Italian translation) of a Greek tragedy from the 5th century B.C. (Electra by Sopholes) with analysis and discussion of the dramaturgical aspects and content.

Learning assessment procedures
Expected knowledge and skills will be tested through an oral interview lasting approximately 20-25 minutes. The candidate will be asked to present topics covered in the course and to comment on one or more passages from the texts covered in class.
Evaluation criteria
Expected knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral exam.
Preparation will be considered adequate if the student demonstrates the following abilities:
1) accurate and thorough exposure of the topics learned in the module, mastering the vocabulary and the terminology relating to the history of Greek tragedy
2) articulated re-elaboration of the contents of the module;
3) ability to understand and interpret the passages of the texts that will be presented
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Single grade in thirtieths at the end of the examination
