Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the study of Greek and Latin philology. At the end of the course the student must demonstrate: 1) knowledge of the meaning of the concept of classical philology from the ancient world to the present; 2) basic knowledge of the philological method as a method of reading and interpreting a written text and documenting the textual state of the documents; 3) knowledge about the transmission of Greek and Latin texts and the techniques of constituting a critical text; 4) ability to use critical editions and to read a critical apparatus.

Prerequisites and basic notions

A basic knowledge of Latin and possibly (but not necessarily) ancient Greek is required.

Program

The first part of the course is an introduction to the concept of classical philology.
The second part will focus on reading passages of Greek and Latin literature with attention to the tradition of the text and to its constitution.

Didactic methods

Mainly frontal lectures. In the final sessions of the course, there will be seinarial activities and exercises.

Learning assessment procedures

Expected knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral exam lasting approximately 20-25 minutes. The candidate will be asked to expound on topics covered in the course and to translate and comment philologically on one or more passages from ancient authors.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Preparation will be considered adequate if the student demonstrates the following abilities:
1) Accurate and thorough exposure of the topics learned in the mdule, mastering the vocabulary and the terminology relating to the philological method;
2) articulated re-elaboration of the contents of the module;
3) ability to read, translate, and interpret the texts presented and discussed in the classroom.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Single grade in thirtieths at the end of the examination
