Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing examples of the contribution modern and contemporary philosophy has made to the understanding:
- of the functioning of language,
- of the relation between language, material reality and social reality.
At the end of the course, students will have to prove that they:
KNOWLEDGE:
- accurately know the authors and texts of the program,
- and their role in the tradition of Philosophy of language.
ABILITIES:
- are able to expose the subjects of the program in a consequential and concise way,
- have acquired an independent judgement on the subjects of the program.

Course title:
Words, things, power and sovereignty: Foucault as reader of Hobbes
In Hobbes, a conventionalist theory of language serves as a premise to the justification of State sovereignty. This course analyzes such theory in the light of Foucault's archeological epistemology and his genealogical critique of the concept of sovereignty.
Methods:
Lectures based on reading and interpretation of the texts and discussions.

Examination Methods
For both attending and non-attending students: oral exam (from June 2019 to February 2020).
Students are required to bring the readings at the exam.
The evaluation will be based on:
- pertinence of the answers,
- consequentiality of the arguments,
- ability to think in a personal and independent way.
