La literatura española del Renacimiento y del Barroco.
Cervantes y los géneros literarios: el amor y las mujeres en el Don Quijote de la Mancha y en las Novelas ejemplares.
El curso entiende proporcionar competencias y herramientas críticas para la comprensión de la literatura y la cultura españolas de los Siglos de Oro en su contexto histórico y social a través de la lectura y el análisis de textos fundamentales en prosa como el Don Quijote de Miguel de Cervantes y en verso como la poesía de Garcilaso de la Vega, de Santa Teresa de Jesús, Luis de León, San Juan de la Cruz…
Después de haber cursado esta asignatura los estudiantes:
— tendrán un conocimiento de la literatura española de los siglos de oro en su contexto histórico y social (géneros y autores…);
— sabrán detectar las principales características de la literatura española de los siglos de oro, sobre todo del Quijote y de las Novelas ejemplares de Cervantes;
— conocerán los fundamentos epistemológicos de la disciplina y los principales hitos de la literatura y de la cultura españolas de los Siglos XVI y XVII.
Spanish Literature of the Renaissance and Baroque
Cervantes and literary genres: love and women in “Don Quijote de la Mancha” and "Novelas ejemplares"
The course aims at providing skills and critical instruments for understanding Spanish literature and culture of the Golden Age within their historical and social context. The course will develop abilities of textual reading and analysis of fundamental texts both in prose (Don Quijote) and verse (Garcilaso de la Vega, Santa Teresa de Jesús, Luis de León, San Juan de la Cruz…)
At the end of the course students:
- will acquire knowledge about the literature of the Golden Age within its historical and social context (genres and authors…);
- will be able to recognize the main features of the Spanish literature of the Golden Age, with regard to those of Cervantes’ “Don Quijote”;
- will acquire knowledge about the epistemological foundations of the discipline and the main characteristics of Spanish literature and culture of the 16th and 17th centuries.

TEACHING METHODS
The lessons will be ex cathedra. Further teaching material will be available for download from e-learning repository.
The professor will regularly receive students during his office hours in order to give additions and clarifications on the contents of the course.

Examination Methods
Español e inglés
Examen oral en español. Los estudiantes que frecuentan podrán acceder a un examen escrito optativo (test) parcial (verifica in itinere), consiguiendo una nota que contribuirá a la evaluación final. La prueba escrita tiene lugar solamente una vez (mes de diciembre).
Los que superen la prueba escrita tienen que preparar para el examen oral solo la segunda parte, o sea la lectura y el comentario del Don Quijote, de las Novelas ejemplares o de las Novelas ejemplares y amorosas o de los Desengaños amorosos de María de Zayas.
Para acceder a este examen – pero no a la verifica in itinere – hay que haber superado Lingua spagnola 1 y Letteratura spagnola 1.
El programa vale también para los estudiantes que no asisten a clase, aunque se invitan a los no frecuentantes a escribir al docente.

The exam will be an oral discussion in Spanish. Attending students will take a self-assessment test (verifica in itinere) during the course. The grade given will be part of the final grade. The self- assessment test will be done only once (in December).
Students who pass the written exam will have to prepare, for the oral examination, only the second part, which consists on the reading and commenting of Don Quijote o Novelas ejemplares o Novelas ejemplares y amorosas o Desengaños amorosos of María de Zayas.
In order to take the oral exam, students need to have already passed both Lingua spagnola 1 (Spanish Language 1) and Letteratura spagnola 1 (Spanish Literature 1). All students are allowed to take part on the self-assessment test (prova in itinere).
The syllabus is the same for non-attending students. Students who cannot attend the lessons are kindly invited to get in touch with the professor.
