Learning objectives
The course aims at improving the fundamental knowledge of Russian cultural history acquired by students during the first year. At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) know the main events of Russian history and to understand the essential elements of modern Russian culture, focusing on 20th century; 2) apply the acquired knowledge in analysing the texts studied during the course, using the given references; 3) develop a personal opinion concerning the main topics covered in the course and to express them in a coherent and proper form.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Before taking this exam students must have previously passed the following exams: Russian literature 1 and Russian language 1.
Program
Totalitarian dynamics between past and present: cult of personality, suppression of diversity, manipulation of memory, suffocation of dissent, violence, fear.
The course starts with a historical overview, which aims to provide the necessary insight for the interpretation of the complex socio-cultural dynamics characterizing the Russian twentieth century, and at the same time to allow a conscious approach to the contemporary world. In Russia today, just as in Soviet Union in the last century, those in power cultivate ideology, create means and use strategies in a mere perspective of self-preservation, showing disdain for a society being torn apart and deeply suffering in some of its components. From this perspective we will analyse some Russian twentieth century’s literary works describing display and drifts of totalitarian power and deeply affecting us in a present that can only be perceived as an eternal return.
