Learning objectives

This course aims at developing and consolidating students’ competence in syntax, lexical-semantics of contemporary English. Students should also acquire a linguistic competence in English at the C1 level (only for the listening and reading comprehension skills) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Prerequisites - In order to access the exam, students need to have passed:
- English C1 computer-based test (minimum score: 60/100)
- English Language 1
- English Literature and Culture 1
As stated in the "Regulatory Handbook for Students in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Area", the validity of the C1 computer test obtained from October 1, 2024, is one year from the date of attainment.

Denotative meaning

Relational semantics and sense relations: hyponymy, meronymy, synonymy, oppositeness, antinomy, multiple opposites, gradable/non gradable, subclasses
Lexical ambiguity, polysemy,
homonymy, homophony, homography
Semantic context: collocation (neo-structuralism),
connotation, figurative senses
cognitive semantics: prototypicality
The present list will be constantly updated. The final version will be available at the end of the course. Materials used during the lessons (slides) will be made available on the Moodle Platform.
The contents of the exam are the same for attending and non-attending students.
Students who are not able to attend lessons are invited to contact the instructor to obtain the password to access the Moodle area.

Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. Students are also invited to contact the instructor via e-mail or during office hours to further discuss the content of the lessons that they could not attend. For non-attendant students it is important to study the content of the syllabus on the books listed in the bibliography that contain a section dedicated to exercises (with solutions).

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam (60 minutes):
The final exam is a written test with Open and closed questions on the topics of the course.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The written test will include a number of questions focusing on the topics covered during the course: multiple choice questions and open-ended questions will be included. The former will evaluate students’ theoretical knowledge; the latter will evaluate students’ ability to apply their knowledge in the analysis of texts.
During the last class students will have the opportunity to perform a mock exam.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade of the exam will be the average of the grade of the written exam and the grade obtained in the CLA computer test. The latter will be converted into /30 according to the CLA conversion table. Students who have obtained external language certificates should obtain and equivalence certificate from the CLA before the date of the exam.

Contamination Lab

The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential course with modules on innovation and enterprise culture that offers the opportunity to work in teams with students from all areas to solve challenges set by companies and organisations. Upon completion of a CLab, students will be entitled to receive 6 CFU D (type credit).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be admitted to any teaching activities, including those of your choice, you must be enrolled in the academic year in which the activities in question are offered. Students who are about to graduate in the March-April sessions are therefore advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in the new academic year in which they are not enrolled, as these graduation sessions are valid for students enrolled in the previous academic year. Therefore, students who undertake an activity in an academic year in which they are not enrolled will not be granted CFU credits.
