Learning outcomes
Using complementary teaching approaches (lectures on general history, monographic lectures on specific topics, seminars and labs aimed at analysing sources), the course aims to take an in-depth look at problems, working methods and tools used by historians and to provide students with the foundations for an understanding of the reality and dynamics of early modern European societies (XVI-XVIII centuries) through a series of thematic lectures on the most important social and institutional aspects of the modern world. The course specifically aims to prepare students to be able to give a critical reading of historical events and phenomena.
Program
After shedding light on key issues of Italian and European history through an exposition and discussion of a series of political, economic, social, religious and cultural aspects, the course will go on to look at the topic of poverty in the early modern age with special attention devoted to the different types of poor people and how they were perceived, to the charitable institutions that were founded to assist these various categories of needy (abandoned children, men unable to work, “fallen women”, elderly unable to support themselves) and to the measures the authorities adopted to contain the phenomenon of pauperism.

Examination Methods
Written examinations and the subsequent oral examination (only for those who first passed the written exam) must be taken during the same examination period, even if on two different dates. A successful written examination which is not followed by an oral examination in the same examination period will be considered null and will need to be taken again during the next exam period.
