Learning objectives
Aim of the course is offering a knowledge of the history of literary Italian language, with specific attention to the language of prose, and improving the ability to independently analyze the texts of Italian tradition. Through the analysis of a literary genre, an author or a group of works relevant to the tradition of Italian literary prose, the course aims to highlight the implications of the language present in the texts with the other elements of the stylistic system (narrative structures, argumentative processes, discursive approach). At the end of the course students are expected to be able to operatively apply the acquired knowledge and, therefore, to independently proceed to the linguistic analysis of a text in Italian literary prose, as preliminary element for its overall interpretation.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge, at least in essential terms, the history of the Italian language and the history of Italian literature.
Program
The course offers an analysis of Umberto Saba's prose texts: the juvenile short stories, the short prose of "Scorciatoie e raccontini", the novel "Ernesto", the critical pages of "Storia e cronistoria del Canzoniere". The focus of the course will be Saba's language and style as a prose writer, also through appropriate references to his poetic texts and prose of contemporary Italian authors.

Didactic methods
Frontal lesson in presence. Students will be asked to read some abstracts of the narrative texts during the course.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam is oral and is intended to ascertain the knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the ability to analyze and interpret the texts.
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation criteria will take into account the direct knowledge of Umberto Saba's texts, the ability to identify its stylistic and linguistic lines, the ability to establish links with other works by the author or authors of Italian literature of the twentieth century.
