Learning outcomes

Learning Objectives: The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the History of Renaissance Philosophy (15th-16th centuries). At the end of the course the student must be able to demonstrate that he has knowledge and ability to deepen the authors and the themes present in the examined texts.

Program

Prerequisites: Knowledge of the History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy

Content of the course: Giordano Bruno and the infinite universe.
The subject of the course will be the first modern age theorization of the universe’s infinity provided by Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), starting with the first of the Italian philosophical dialogues, the “Cena de le Ceneri”, whose first dialogue will be read, to the definitive arrangement of the doctrine of cosmic infinity in the poem “De immenso et innumerabilibus mundis” and his defense in the Venetian and Roman process. To integrate the main theme of the course, an analysis will be performed of the ethical, metaphysical and theological contents and issues of the other Brunian philosophical dialogues and their influence on the most important authors of philosophical thought in the modern age.

Examination Methods

Exam method: oral. The purpose of the exam is to verify the knowledge and understanding of the topics dealt with and to evaluate the in-depth analysis skills over the dealt subjects acquired by the students. The exam does not make any differences between attending and non-attending students.
