Learning outcomes

1. To gain knowledge and an understanding of the theoretical foundations for psychology of art, focusing on concepts concerning the inner workings of sight and perception. To be able to internalize such concepts by developing observation skills and a critical eye for art analysis.
2. To gain knowledge and an understanding of the basic theory in the context of art consumption and art making according to the principals of Environmental, Social, and Educational Psychology. More specifically, to contextualise and examine the interaction between art and the individual on a social, environmental, cognitive, subjective and objective level.
3. To gain knowledge and an understanding of the fundamentals of Neuroaesthetics: the theories of Cognitive Science and of aesthetics that deal with the theme of aesthetic experience from a sensory and emotional viewpoint.

Program

By looking at international case studies, this course motivates students to reflect upon experimental ideas and practices that promote the role of liasing figures in the field of art consumption. The aim is the analysis of the stimuli that involve the perception of an art piece by the individuals, by applying the various techniques that allow for the diverse groups of visitors to embrace art, as taught by Psychology and Pedagogy of Art.
Designed with an interdisciplinary perspective in mind, this course consists of four parts. The first part is dedicated to the study of the literature concerning the theories found in Psychology of Art. The second part examines in depth the various methodologies found in Educational Psychology in a museum as an environment. The third part taps into the basic reasoning that Environmental Psychology has to offer when applied to museums and art galleries. The fourth part dissects a variety of contemporary Neuroaesthetics experiments. Each module includes asthetic experiences of relevant case studies conducted with different groups of visitors: children, teenagers, families, adults, elderly and people with special needs.

Examination Methods

The exam will be oral.
The evaluation system does not differenciate between students who attend the lectures and those who choose to study independently.

In relation to the situation deriving from the Coronavirus emergency, the above examination modality is modified for the 2020 summer session, in accordance with the indications of the university, in oral exam with telematic modality (ZOOM).
