Learning outcomes

The Laboratory in Philosophical Texts Reading intends to offer the analysis of some philosophical texts, focusing on contemporary philosophical debate, in order to highlight the theoretical issues (with particular regard to the problem of knowledge and metaphysics) in a close discussion with students.
The purpose of the laboratory is to allow students to acquire and develop critical, hermeneutical, and logical-argumentative skills, engaging them in discussions and seminary activities.

The laboratory focuses on the debate on the New Realism and, in particular, Meillassoux’s Speculative Realism exposed in After Finitude.

Reference texts

The reference text of the traditional lectures is:
1) Quentin Meillassoux, Dopo la finitudine. Saggio sulla necessità della contingenza, a cura di Massimiliano Sandri, Mimesis, Milano-Udine 2012.

The texts of the seminars will be assigned to the students during the first lessons of the laboratory.

Examination Methods

Didactic Methods

The teaching methods of the laboratory decline in two different ways:
1) traditional lectures, which are dedicated to Meillassoux’s text. This work will be read, analysed and commented in the classroom, providing questions and themes for a close discussion and a fruitful interaction with the students.
2) seminars: additional texts, related to the subject of the laboratory, will be assigned to students. About these texts, students are required to give a 30-minute seminar, followed by a discussion introduced and moderated by the teacher and where other students will play the role of discussants. The texts of the seminars and the discussant-roles will be assigned to the students during the first lessons of the laboratory.

Each lesson will be recorded in mp3 format and, together with all the material analysed during the course, will be punctually loaded on the e-learning platform of the University with the aim of easing the study for both attending students and those who can not attend lectures.
During the academic year, an individual consultation service is also available at the teacher's study, at the times indicated on the web pages and readily updated.
At the first lesson, students will receive the full calendar of teaching activities, together with the dates and classroom in which the lessons will take place and a synoptic presentation of the subject of the course.
Any suspension of lectures for academic reasons will be readily communicated in the classroom, on the web site, and on the e-learning platform forum.

Examination arrangements

The assessment of the learning outcomes of the laboratory will be done both during the lessons (taking into account the active participation, the quality of interventions, and the seminar activities) and through the composition of a paper (min. 10 word pages; font: times new roman; font size: 12 pt.; 1.5 line spacing; justified text) about the subject and authors examined. These papers will be given to the teacher at the official examination sessions.
Since the evaluation is expressed in “approved/rejected”, the teacher will email each student, expressing an articulated judgment on the paper.
The examination is the same for both attending students and non-attending ones.
