Learning outcomes
This course is aimed at helping students expand their knowledge about the development and diversification of the English language in English varieties. Module 1 introduces the students to the use of varieties and appropriateness with exemplifications from magazines such as the Times and the Economist, and other new and old media.Module 2 is intended to give insights into linguistic, cultural and ideological issues related to the diverse uses of English in an international context and in situations of intercultural communication.
Program
The course is structured in 2 modules
Module 1 “Introduction to the study of varieties of English”
Topics:
-diatopic varieties and the model of geographical varieties
-diastratic variety and sociolinguistic approach: linguistic levels model, and the study of correlations with social variables
-the learning model for standard, non-standard, and regional varieties: examples of regional varieties and international varieties. The case of non-rhoticity of Bostonian accent
-appropriateness as key factor in swifting from one variety to the other: exemplifications
-Business English from a linguistic perspective : exemplifications
Module 2 “English varieties and the spread of English around the globe.
