Learning objectives
At the end of the General Medicine Area practical training the students should achieve the following objectives:
• master and implement the best practices of the doctor-patient relationship;
• be able to collect the medical history and perform an objective examination;
• apply clinical reasoning, be able to identify priority or urgent and secondary problems, to generate diagnostic hypotheses and to identify diagnostic tests of greater sensitivity and specificity in order to confirm or refute such hypotheses;
• be able to interpret laboratory results;
• be able to interpret diagnostic imaging reports;
• comprehend decision-making processes related to medical treatment;
• be able to fill reports and prescriptions;
• be able to assess the appropriateness of the indication for hospitalization, addressing patients to an Emergency Room, of consultants
• be able to focus on the reason and adequateness of medical care notwithstanding complex medical conditions, which might include chronicity and other critical issues;
• be able to indicate prevention and health education actions;
• be aware of the importance of observing strict punctuality in working activities;
• comply with hygiene behaviour and rules of medical clinics;
• know how to positively interact with the medical, nursing and secretarial staff
Prerequisites and basic notions
Have achieved an adequate theoretical preparation in order to be admitted to the qualifying degree
Program
Integrate structural and functional symptoms, signs and alterations and aggregate them into a comprehensive assessment of the health status of the individual, adult and elderly, in terms of preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation,
• formulating differential diagnostic hypotheses after having elaborated the patient's signs and symptoms, taking into account their relevance, severity and urgency and after having critically acquired and analyzed all the instrumental and laboratory data necessary to confirm the correctness of the diagnostic procedure,
• set up a structured and reasoned therapeutic program on the acquired knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology and systematic therapy,
• analyze and resolve the clinical problems of the internist type, diagnostic and therapeutic, according to a methodology that allows to evaluate the relationships between benefits, risks and costs, also using the results of "evidence-based medicine",
• set up, in the overall management strategy of the patient, also possible aspects of prevention, intervention on the environment and rehabilitation,
• be able to communicate properly with the patient, with his relatives, and be able to correctly set up work relationships with colleagues and other professional health figures on

Practical activity carried out in the clinics of general practitioners
Learning assessment procedures
There is no single formalized examination moment. The student will be evaluated during the entire internship taking into consideration all the aspects present in the last page of the appropriate booklet that explore his medical skills, his professionalism and his ability to interact with the patient. The tutor will express his own evaluation, for each of the training objectives, using the following letters: A corresponding to excellent; B excellent; C good; D satisfactory; It's enough; F insufficient. The final assessment will be expressed by the tutor in terms of: "suitable" or "unsuitable". Only the achievement of eligibility allows access to the degree exam which enables the profession of doctor-surgeon, in case of non-eligibility the student will have to repeat the internship.
