Learning outcomes

Aims of the Immunology course are: acquisition of the knowledge of the fundamental biological and physiological mechanisms regulating the function of the immune system in the protection from diseases, and of the immune system pathology, with particular attention to hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency; acquisition of the ability to consider the function of the immune system both in health and in disease status and of the bases of the most common laboratory immune techniques in order to become able to understand the results of any laboratory analysis based on immunological techniques; knowledge of the immune responses against infections, of both the congenital and the acquired disfunctions of the immune system, of the hypersensibility reactions and of the main autoimmune as well as lymphoproliferative diseases; knowledge of the immune strategies applied to the therapy of allergies and immunodeficiencies; knowledge of the general principles of vaccination therapy and immune suppression; kowledge of tumor immunology and immunology of transplantation.

Program

Innate and acquired Immunity. Anatomy, cytology and biochemistry of the immune system: lymphoid organs, cells (lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, granulocytes, hemopoietic precursors), and molecules (immunoglobulins, T cell receptor, MHC molecules, co-stimulatory molecules). Cellular receptors of innate immunity, sensing of pathogen and damage patterns. Antigen processing and presentation. Cell-mediated and humoral immune response. The complement cascade. Cytokines, chemokines and cell-cooperation. Defense against infections. Immune tolerance. Hypersensibility reactions. Autoimmune diseases. Immunodeficiency. Immunity and tumors. Principles of immunotherapy. Immuno-hematology. Immunology of transplantation.
