Learning outcomes

Diseases of the biliary tract frequently have a complex diagnostic and therapeutic approach that require the use of different tools. These diseases are common and in recent years have had important developments and innovation in diagnostic approaches and surgical therapy.
The goal of this couse is to guide students in the diagnostic workup for begin and malignant diseases involving the intrahepatic bile ducts, gallbladder and extrahepatic bile ducts. They will also learn the principles of the different surgical treatments of these diseases. With multimedia supports both the general principles and the technical details will be described. One important area of the course will be dedicated to technical and technological innovation that have recently been introduced in open surgery, laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery.

Program

The course will illustrate the clinical characteristics of the most important malignant and benign diseases of the biliary tract.
In particular, the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of the following pathologies will be illustrated:
- Lithiasis of the gallbladder and of common bile duct
- Intrahepatic lithiasis
- Inflammatory diseases of the biliary tract
- Bile duct cancer
- Gallbladder cancer
- Intrahepatic biliary ducts cancers
- Distal bilie duct cancer
- Neoplasm of the papilla of Vater
