Learning outcomes
Among the lifestyles that contribute to successful aging, physical activity plays a very important role, as has now been widely demonstrated in the scientific literature. The geriatric rehabilitation methodology course aims to illustrate the specificity of physiotherapy intervention in frail elderly subjects, characterized by complex and complicated clinical pictures. Within a global vision of the sick person, the student will acquire skills to formulate a functional and cognitive assessment so as to orient the physiotherapy program to maintain autonomy and achieve the best possible quality of life in collaboration with the multi-professional care team .
Program
Illness, frailty and disability are intertwined in elderly geriatric patients, helping to create the characteristics that modify physiotherapy intervention compared to the same pathology in adult subjects. The course will focus on the issue of sarcopenia, related to the condition of frailty, and on the role of the physiotherapist in the multidimensional assessment of geriatric subjects as well as in their integrated management within the care team.
With respect to the characteristic syndromic presentation of diseases, the following topics will be explored:
sarcopenia and its correlations with functional decline in the elderly
Immobility syndrome and the role of the physiotherapist in the prevention and treatment of this condition
Instability syndrome and the role of the physiotherapist in the prevention, evaluation and treatment with particular regard to the hip fracture
Parkinson's disease: the role of physiotherapy in its various phases
Cognitive impairment syndrome with a focus on specific relationship strategies and physiotherapy intervention in these subjects

Examination Methods
Goals: students must demonstrate the ability to understand the geriatric patient profile, the characteristics of the pathology, and the modalities of intervention in some of the most common syndromes and degenerative diseases (immobilization syndrom, fall syndrome, cognitive impairment and Parkinson’s disease)
Content: units 1,2,3 in full. Additionally, candidates may choose between unit 4 slides relative to Parkinson’s disease or to cognitive impairment.
Format: oral exam (3 questions)
Evaluation: candidates will answer three questions (10 points each, for a total of 30 points). Two questions will focus on units 1, 2, and 3, and one question will focus on either Parkinson’s disease or cognitive impairment, based on the candidate choice.
