Learning outcomes
To know the bases of body and skeletal growth, as well as the principle pediatric skeletal diseases and metabolic disorders, such as rickets and osteogenesis imperfecta, and their management, either surgical or pharmacological or physical therapy - based. To know the effects of exercise on growth.
To know pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and treatments of the principle perinatal disorders, like congenital hip dysplasia, congenital muscular torticollis, obstetrical palsy and congenital clubfoot.
To know pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and treatments of the pinciple pediatric respiratory diseases (mucoviscidosis, asthma, pediatric malignancies).
To know pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and treatments of spinal malformations and of recurrent muscular and skeletic pains.
Program
I lesson: physiology of growth and pubertal development, bone mass peak, assessment of bone mineral density, concept of osteoporosis, role of physical exercise in the skeletal development, secondary short statures and benign retardation of growth and pubertal development.
II lesson: short statures due to genetic defects, associated with skeletal major alterations and/or complex syndromes (achondroplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta, SHOX deficit, chromosomal aberrations), tall staures. Principle perinatal disorders of muscles and bones (torticollis, hip dysplasia, obstetric paralysis, clubfoot).
III lesson: spinal and limb torsion anomalies. Bone pain in children. Idiopathic arthritis. Fractures. Red flags for child abuse.
IV lesson: overweight and obesity and related complications with any interest in the field of physiotherapy.
V lesson: respiratory diseases requiring physical therapy. Lessons overview.
