Learning outcomes

Analysis of the function of the respiratory system, which thanks to the mechanics of the rib cage musculature determines ventilation, responsible for the supply of oxygen and the elimination of carbon dioxide. Particular attention to the interpretation of blood gas analysis, pivotal examination of the effectiveness of ventilation (carbon dioxide pressure) and gas exchange (oxygen pressure) and acid / base balance.
Hints of reading spirometry: distinction between obstructive and restrictive frameworks.
Acquisition of the characteristics of the most important respiratory diseases, susceptible to physiotherapy assistance.
Ability to classify dyspnea (pneumogenic or cardiogenic or other causes) for an effective respiratory rehabilitation intervention.

Program

Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
Outline of chest radiology
Respiratory mechanics
Spirometry: static and dynamic lung volumes; bronchodilation and bronchial challenge test with methacholine
Gas exchanges and tests dedicated to this study: carbon monoxide diffusion test and blood gas analysis, walking test (latent respiratory insufficiency evaluation test)
Respiratory failure: pathophysiological mechanisms: alterations in the ventilation / perfusion ratio, shunt, hypoventilation, diffusion alterations
Common symptoms in the respiratory patient:
- pneumogenic versus cardiogenic dyspnoea
- cough: mechanism and assistance to cough
Respiratory diseases susceptible to physiotherapy:
- Obstructive diseases
COPD with particular attention to the main cause (smoking)
Bronchial asthma
Bronchiectasis
- Bacterial and viral pneumonia (particularly SARS Co V2 pneumonia)
