Learning outcomes

The course leads the student to know the main determinants of health and disease, the preventive strategies both individual and collective, and of interventions to promote the health and safety of their users. Particularly, it aims to understand the causes, the pathogenic mechanisms, and the methods of prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Organization of health services:
- History and foundations of the organization of the National Health System (NHS)
- Fundamentals of organization of the Regional Health System (RHS)
- Fundamentals of the organization of Local Health Units and Hospitals
- Corporate Act

Brief summary of the epidemiological tools:
- Definition, objectives and characteristics of epidemiology
- Measures in epidemiology
- The concept of health, disease and causes in the epidemiology. Criteria for the assessment of the causal connection.
- The main types of epidemiological studies: descriptive, analytical, experimental

Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases:
- The epidemiological chain and the methods of transmission: endemic, sporadic and epidemic diseases
- The generic direct prophylaxis: standard precautions according to the CDC in Atlanta
- Indirect prophylaxis: hints on disinfection and sterilization of substrates
- The specific prophylaxis: vaccine prophylaxis: vaccine strategies, the Italian law and vaccine, the schedule of childhood vaccinations
