Learning outcomes
The course is aimed to provide students with basic knowledge about Psycholinguistics, by presenting the functioning of language and cognitive processes that support it, by examining learning, comprehension, speech and reading.
Starting with an introductory analysis of the historical reasons that led Psycholinguistics to become as it is, the course will then focus on main theories and researches in the field, from a viewpoint centered on language processing, acquisition and production of language, its main properties and disorders.
Program
The course will present the main theories and experimental researches that in the last decades tried to explain the role of language within the communication systems, and the different types of communicative languages, the origins and the development of language in both non human and human animals, its acquisition, the relationship among language and the other cognitive processes, like perception, memory, and thought, the way in which it is understood and used in reading and writing, the neural bases, the main disorders.

Examination Methods
In the dedicated web page lessons slides will be available to students. The exam consists in a written multiple choice test. Students interested in studying in more detail a specific topic can write a short dissertation to supplement the written exam mark. The argument should be proposed via e-mail and the dissertation should be presented at least two weeks before the examination session.
