Sociology and communication in sport activities (2011/2012)
Learning outcomes
The course is articulated into three parts. In the first one, through the analysis developed by Elias and Dunning, the role of sports in modern society will be presented and its functions discussed. In the second part, the attention will focused on the main sociological theories of mass communication. More specifically, after having briefly described the nature of mass media and their relationship with the wider social system, functionalist, culturalist and semiotic approaches will be explained and evaluated. The last part of the course will address directly the impact of the mass communication on sports. Through an analysis of the statistical data collected by ISTAT during its three national research on sports, media and leisure (1995, 2000, 2006), the link among sports, sponsors, media and audiences will be deconstructed and critically examined.
