Module title: HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
This module will cover the following topics:
- Language change
- The origins of English
- Old English: socio-historical background, linguistic features, texts
- Middle English: socio-historical background, linguistic features, texts
- Early Modern English and Late Modern English: socio-historical background, linguistic features, the standardisation of spelling, the Great Vowel Shift, the spread of English, texts

Didactic methods
The course combines face to face classroom lectures in English with practical exercises aimed at teaching students to read and analyse historical texts.
The programme is the same for students who do not attend classes: they are invited to download the materials available on the Moodle platform and refer to the texts indicated in the bibliography.
Teaching support methods:
Supplementary teaching materials will be available on the Moodle platform. In addition, the lecturer is available via email and during her office hours (published on the lecturer's web page). Students who may miss classes are invited to contact the lecturer.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will be an oral test aimed at ascertaining the learning outcomes relating to the topics listed in the course programme. Part I and Part II of the exam will be taken on the same day.
Students who do not attend classes are required to study the texts indicated in the bibliography.
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation is based on the following criteria:
- correctness and exhaustiveness of answers to questions
- ability to read and analyse texts relating to different historical periods
