Learning objectives
The course intends to provide the fundamental elements required for an understanding of the international economic relationships which developed in the Modern and Contemporary Age. After an outline of the historical conditions and the motives underlying the expansion of Europe, the course investigates forms of organisation of production, trade and circulation of the characteristic goods from the different areas (Europe, America, Asia, Africa ...) in the 15th-20th centuries with particular emphasis on the problem of the structure of interregional and intercontinental trade routes. The course aims to provide a general knowledge of structural and institutional evolution of european economy since the early modern age to the present.
Students must demonstrate that they have understood the structures of Economic history, that they are able to correctly place problems and events, and that they know the most relevant themes of the economic debate.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prior knowledge is required. Consultation of a High School History manual is recommended
Program
The characteristics of the primary sector in the modern age. Transformation activities in Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Merchants, trades, commercial areas in Europe and outside Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The industrial revolution: the cases of England, France, Germany, the United States and Italy. The era of absolute liberalism (1850-1875). The protectionist response of the state (1875-1914). World War I and its effects. The Great Depression and the interwar years. World War II and its effects. The new structure of the international economy (1939-1953). The Bretton Woods system and its transformation. The oil crises, stagflation and the emergence of deregulation. The world economy from the second half of the twentieth century to the financial globalization of the twenty-first century. The four industrial revolutions. From the great divergence to economic convergence. The evolution of company sizes and forms from a historical perspective in Italy, in Europe, in the global context. Consultation of a general history manual relating to the 14th-20th centuries is strongly recommended. Further teaching material will be made available on the teaching e-learning platform during the course. In-depth texts on individual themes of the program will also be indicated by the teacher to the attending students. TEXT BOOKS: M. Didactic methods
Lectures and possible in-depth seminars. The teaching materials used in class will be available on the teaching web page. Lessons are held face to face, with registration on the Panopto platform. The recording will be made available within a few days.
Learning assessment procedures
Full exam: the examination will take place in oral form.
The assessment method is the same for students attending or not attending the classes. Students must demonstrate that they have understood the structures of Economic history, that they are able to correctly place problems and events, and that they know the most relevant themes of the economic debate. The evaluation shall be assigned in 30/30
Evaluation criteria
Oral exam Marks out of thirty The evaluation will examine in particular the following skills: - depth and extension of the notions learned; - language properties in the exposition of concepts and notions; - ability to adequately connect the various acquired knowledge; - ability to critically relate the events of the past with what is happening in the contemporary world.
