Didactic methods
The methods of teaching delivery fall within the scope of the teaching innovation program the DidActive project. The project aims to introduce an approach based on an active teaching. In addition to the classic approach based on lectures, this course includes the following innovative approaches based on the different topics.
The main one is based on the reverse classroom principle and team work according to the Team Based Learning model. The approach involves the study of teaching material before the course, an ongoing written assessment in the form of quizzes, first individually and then in teams, a discussion and clarification of key concepts, the execution of an application exercise in teamwork with discussion and justification of the choices adopted by each group.
The second approach is that of the Problem Based Learning which involves learning through the analysis of a clinical problem. It is based on group work with different tasks assigned to different group members. Starting from a scenario, students will have to list and categorize the problems related to the scenario and formulate hypotheses. They will therefore have to survey the knowledge to be acquired for the verification of the hypotheses. The resolution of the scenario is planned during a second lesson after the students have acquired the necessary knowledge.
For some topics of the program the teaching delivery method will be strengthened by an approach based on role-playing games. Different roles of a scenario are assigned to individual students who are asked to respond and interact in solving a clinical scenario. Finally, for other topics the lectures will be completed by the analysis of clinical cases in the form of sequential multiple-choice tests, based on progressive questions on the various phases of a clinical scenario.
The practical methods of carrying out the lessons will be explained in greater detail during the first lesson.
Learning assessment procedures
In addition to the ongoing knowledge assessments, students will be subjected to an oral exam. The oral exam includes two questions, one to assess the ability to apply knowledge to a clinical case and one to assess the ability to solve a problem related to a surgical patient. The final grade will be determined for one third by the results of the ongoing assessments, for two thirds by the ability to apply knowledge to a clinical case and by the ability to solve a problem related to a surgical patient.
Evaluation criteria
Final grade greater than or equal to 18/30.
