Learning objectives
Providing an overview of the physical and mathematical principles, components and electric/electronic circuits in relation to biomedical systems, notions of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation with particular focus on electrical measurements related to radiation protection and medical imaging systems. Providing knowledge related to the analogic signal acquisition and digitization chain. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS: In this module, students will acquire the fundamental tools of Mathematical Analysis to address problems and applications in orthopedic techniques. At the end of this module, students will be able to use logical deduction techniques which are typical of mathematical reasoning, handle algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions; draw and interpret the chart of a function involving a real variable; use the basic tools of differential and integral calculus. ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENTS: Provide an overview of the fundamental electronic components and circuits with particular focus on the equipment used by orthopedic technicians. Specific attention to the chain of physical variables detection, transduction into electrical variables and to their conversion into digital signals. RADIOPROTECTION: Knowing the fundamental principles of radiation protection and current legislation. Knowing the concepts on ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, describing their interactions with the environment, their features, biological effects and risks. Providing knowledge on the methods used in diagnostic imaging (X-rays, ultrasounds, magnetic fields). Providing elements for the interpretation of radiographic images of the skeleton and of the central and peripheral nervous system. Providing elements of radiographic technique and radiotherapy.
