Learning outcomes

The student should know the structural and biological properties of pathological bacteria and viruses and the related mechanism of pathogenesis. Moreover, the student should know the microorganisms involved in bone, joint and prosthetic infections.

Program

Microbiology indroduction and microrganisms classification.

Bacteriology.
bacteria cell: structure and functions of fondamental compounds as cell wall, citoplasmatic membrane, chromosome etc and non fondamental compounds as capsule, flagella.
Spore: structure, formation and riactivation.
Bacterial reproduction.
Bacterial pathogenesis: colonisation, adherence, invsion factors and toxins production.

Virology.
Viruses structure and organisation.
Virus replication cycles.
Virus pathogenesis

Joint infections
Acute infectious arthritis: staphylococci, streptococci, Neisserie, Haemophilus
Chronic infectious arthritis: mycobacteria, borrelia
Reactive Arthritis: Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, Yersina, Chlamydia and Ureoplasma
Viral arthritis: parvovirus B19, hepatitis virus, Chikungunia virus
Osteomyelitis
Infections of implants.
