Learning outcomes

1. To provide key orientations in the history of the city and of the territories it controlled between 15th and 17th century. 2. To place the history of the Republic in its international political, diplomatic and economic context. 3. To focus on some cultural themes (learned and popular alike), including the role played by Venice as a centre originating religious dissent. 4. To emphasize the political singularity of the Venetian experience in comparison to other Italian and European states.

• The political and administrative organization of the Venetian state
• The patriciate (structure and composition, social role)
• The economy (markets and merchants, the economy of the city and of the mainland, the merchant fleet)
• The administration of justice in Venice and in the territories of the State
• Society and ways of life (daily life, consumption, nutrition, diseases and treatments, beliefs, etc.)
• Venice in the international context
• Religion (the ecclesiastical organization and popular religion. Inquisition and heresy).
• Publishing and book trade
• Public opinion and its control (newspapers, coffee houses, ambassadors, State Inquisitors, prohibited books, etc.)
• Culture (arts and sciences, academies, the press, popular culture )
• The spaces and times of daily life
• The myth and the antimyth of Venice
