Learning outcomes
This course’s purpose is to attain basic knowledge of the history and aesthetics of film, photography and photojournalism, putting them in the frame of nowadays communication. The course aims at teaching competence more than information only, and at providing autonomy of judgement. Giving the interpretation keys of an image to the student will be a major goal, so that she/he can reapply them to any subject in the future.
We will take into account the interactions between cinema photography journalism and scene photography. Furthermore, we will consider advertisement and political communication.
Program
Elements of film history and of the history of photography.
Analysis of the filmic text and reading of an image.
Aesthetics of photography: analysis of some ‘historical’ photos and their relationship with the imagination. ‘Realism’ in photography as a myth: staging and fiction in photojournalism, from Robert Capa to Nick Ut.

Examination Methods
Exam will be an oral interview.
Both for attending and for non-attending students, the interview will be based on the films in the syllabus and on the photographic images reproduced in "Il mestiere di vedere. Introduzione al fotogiornalismo".
Attending students can choose a written ongoing evaluation.
