Learning outcomes
The course is designed to provide the student with:
- a knowledge of critical issues in translation theories and studies (methods, criticism, description vs. prescription, etc.), with a particular emphasis on Italian theories of translation in XXth Century.
- a language (vocabulary) and discourse (manner) for “talking” about translation.
- a critical skill to analyze and compare different interlinguistic translations of a literary source text.
Program
This course will:
- deal with the main topics faced by modern Translation Studies, such as the couple theory-practice, reflection-experience, acceptability-adequacy, source-target text;
- analyze key terms in the field of Translation Studies, as interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation, domestication, foreignization, manipulation, movement, poetics, constraints, translation project, translation purpose, ethics of translation, productive criticism etc.;
- analyze interlingual translations of a number of literary texts presenting specific formal constraints (as proverbs and puns), and also different intersemiotic translations of the same source-text.
To support the teaching and to integrate the exam, students will have Power Point slides available. Non-attending students must contact the teacher to agree on the exam topics.

Examination Methods
Examination: oral (on line, zoom)
The final oral exam will verify acquisition of knowledge and skills through a dialogue which will be focused on the syllabus.
Students will demonstrate methodological awareness, critical and interpretative skills; ability to master the bibliography in the course programme; ability to present what has been learned with linguistic appropriateness, precision and rhetorical effectiveness.
