Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students are expected to:

- Know the most relevant morpho-syntactic structures of the Russian language, its lexical peculiarities, different linguistic registers, as well as the specific terminology for literature and publishing;
- apply their knowledge of the language in the understanding of long and complex texts, as well as in oral and written communication, including in the areas of literature and publishing;
- have acquired the Russian language skills correspondent to CEFR C1 level.

Program

1. Morpho-syntax: indefinite and negative pronouns; use of cases; simple sentences and impersonal constructions; complex sentences (dependent clauses: time, cause, condition, purpose; indirect questions); direct and indirect speech; the verbal system (verb aspects); consecutio temporum.
2. Russian vocabulary in the literary field. Theoretical problems of translation and practical applications to literary texts.

Videos (containing grammar explanations) will be provided for one part of the lectures and the other part as online practice (including exercises, reading, translating, grammar comments, speaking) with the teacher. Both the recorded material and the link to the online classes will be published on the Moodle page.

Examination Methods

Assessment through written test and oral examination (before taking the oral examination the student has to pass the written test).

The written test is meant to check the student’s knowledge of morpho-syntax and includes grammar open questions and exercises (as well as the translation of short sentences from Italian to Russian).
During the oral examination the student will be asked to read, translate and comment (both grammar and content) an extract from one of the texts the teacher presented during the online classes.

This exam cannot be taken before passing the following second year exams: Russian Language 2 and Russian Literature 2. A C1 language certificate is required.
